
Overview:
After a three-year investigation into the messaging app “Whatsapp” owned by Facebook, The Irish Data Protection Commission found “transparency” as the common theme of complaints by individual data subjects who were users as well as non-users of WhatsApp’s services. These complaints revolved around how the messaging app shares user data with other Facebook-owned companies. On Thursday, sept 2nd, 2021, the DPC announced its decision of imposing a €225 million fine on Whatsapp Ireland along with the order to remedy its data protection policies within 3 months to comply with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR.
