Data Risk Management

Improving Your Data Discovery, Data Mapping, and Compliance

April 22, 2020

The first point of call in any data objective is to know what data you have. It sounds obvious, but you might be surprised how many organisations don’t know where their data is.

Not only do they not know where it is, but it’s very likely that they don’t know what that data contains, who has access to it, who owns it, whether the data holds any value, which third-parties you share it with, which regulations govern that data, and so on.

More importantly, in the world of data privacy or e-discovery, organisations need to be able to quickly and easily respond to requests for their data—whether it’s in litigation or with regards to DSARs (data subject access requests).

That’s where your data inventory should assist. A data discovery exercise will bring to light all of an organisation’s data and produce a map of all the data sources, as well as a wide variety of other forms of critical information, like a Record of Processing Activities (RoPA), that are required under data protection regulations like the GDPR.

A data inventory should be the foundation of any Legal Governance, Risk and Compliance objective (Legal GRC). Without a data inventory that allows stakeholders to take action and work in concert with other data practices, it will be of limited use.

Exterro teamed up with Data Protection Network (DPN) to explore how technology can help with your data discovery, mapping and compliance requirements.
