How I’m Turning My Vision for Legal Technology into Reality: Why Exterro Acquired Zapproved

Check out the first of two articles by Exterro Founder and CEO Bobby Balachandran on his decision to acquire e-discovery services provider Zapproved.

As we operate in 2026, the vision Bobby Balachandran articulated in early 2023—to create a "PeopleSoft for Legal"—has transitioned from an ambitious roadmap into the industry standard for Legal Governance, Risk, and Compliance (Legal GRC).

The acquisition of Zapproved was the final piece of the "Triple Crown" strategy (Jordan Lawrence for Privacy, AccessData for Forensics, and Zapproved for Corporate E-Discovery). Here is the cleaned and contextually updated version of Bobby's announcement for your 2026 records.

Turning Vision into Reality: Why Exterro Acquired Zapproved

In 2008, my team and I founded Exterro because we saw that legal departments were being left behind by the "Big Data" revolution. We knew they needed a unified platform, not a collection of disconnected tools. Following our 2023 acquisition of Zapproved, and our subsequent growth into 2026, that vision of a holistic software platform—functioning like SAP for Legal—is now a reality for thousands of global enterprises.

The Building Blocks of Legal GRC

Our journey to a unified platform was paved by three strategic acquisitions that transformed how organizations manage data risk:

  • 2019: Jordan Lawrence – We entered the privacy market by acquiring 30 years of expertise in data mapping and information governance. This allowed our users to finally understand what data they hold, where it is, and how to delete it defensibly.
  • 2020: AccessData – We integrated the "gold standard" of digital forensics (FTK®). This gave legal teams the power to conduct forensically sound investigations into everything from HR violations to massive cybersecurity breaches within the same platform they use for litigation.
  • 2023: Zapproved – While we had the robust "innovation engine," Zapproved brought a legendary commitment to customer outcomes. Joining forces allowed us to combine powerful technology with a "ridiculously successful" service model.

Data as the "Oil" of the 21st Century

I have often said that data today is what oil was at the turn of the 20th century. It is the fuel for transformative economic growth, but it also carries existential risks—specifically in the form of cybercrime, regulatory fines, and "nuclear" litigation verdicts.

By 2026, the average cost of a data breach has climbed significantly, and privacy regulations have expanded to nearly every major global economy. Legal departments are no longer just "legal"; they are the architects of corporate data strategy. They need a "single pane of glass" to:

  1. Identify and Preserve: Instantly find relevant data across petabytes of storage.
  2. Review and Redact: Use AI to cull massive datasets and protect PII/Privilege.
  3. Investigate and Respond: Handle internal threats and external breaches with forensic precision.

Looking Ahead from 2026

When we made the "big bet" on Zapproved during the choppy economic waters of 2023, some questioned the timing. But as I’ve learned over 15+ years, the time to be bold is when others are retrenching. Today, Exterro is the industry-defining platform because we recognized that Privacy, Forensics, and E-Discovery are converging.

We aren't just building a "better mousetrap"—we are giving Chief Legal Officers the technology they need to navigate the pitfalls of the digital age and find the path to success.
