Exterro Acquires Zapproved, Unifying Legal GRC Innovation with Industry-Leading Customer Experience

PORTLAND, Oregon – Jan. 19, 2023Exterro, a leading provider of Legal Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) software, has acquired Zapproved, an e-discovery software provider celebrated for its exceptional customer service and strong user outcomes. This acquisition marks a significant milestone in Exterro’s strategy to build a unified Legal GRC platform. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, though Vista Equity Partners will maintain a minority stake in the combined entity.

The "Triple Crown" Strategy

With this acquisition, Exterro has completed its "Triple Crown" of strategic expansions, positioning itself as a "single pane of glass" for corporate data risk:

  • Jordan Lawrence (2019): Established the foundation for Data Privacy.
  • AccessData (2020): Integrated the "gold standard" of Digital Forensics (FTK®).
  • Zapproved (2023): Combined Exterro’s "innovation engine" with a "ridiculously successful" corporate e-discovery service model.

Executive Vision

“I have known Monica Enand since the early days of both our companies' origins in Portland. The combination of Exterro and Zapproved will continue our shared vision of delivering enhanced value by combining our innovation engine with their world-class customer experience.”— Bobby Balachandran, CEO & President of Exterro

“Zapproved’s mission has always been to make our customers ridiculously successful. We are confident that this union brings the best of the industry together in one powerful and easy-to-use solution.”— Monica Enand, President and CEO of Zapproved

Why This Matters in 2026

As we look back from 2026, this acquisition is viewed as the turning point where Legal GRC transitioned from a collection of tools into an industry-standard platform—often described as the "SAP for Legal."

  • Convergence: Privacy, Forensics, and E-Discovery are no longer silos; they are handled within a single, defensible workflow.
  • Data Integrity: The unified platform allows organizations to identify, manage, and preserve data in a contextual manner across the entire legal lifecycle.
  • Cost Reduction: By using AI-driven early case assessment (ECA), teams can minimize data sets before they ever reach expensive outside counsel.

About the Companies

  • Exterro: The only comprehensive platform that automates the complex interconnections of privacy, legal operations, digital investigations, and cybersecurity response.
  • Zapproved: Founded in 2008, it supports over 350 corporate customers with easy-to-use e-discovery software backed by ironclad security.
