FTK Over the Air: Training the Next Generation of Digital Forensics Experts

October 28, 2022

Many of the folks who read our content about digital forensics are well-established professionals. They might work in law enforcement, or maybe they've transitioned into a career in the private sector. But they're more concerned with picking up new techniques they can use, or staying up to date on the latest technology that's come out.

A lot of these pros came of age when there wasn't a clearly defined educational path to digital forensics. They may have been in law enforcement and needed to figure out how to find evidence on a computer. They might have been trained in computer science or IT and transitioned into an investigatory role. But there weren't necessarily undergraduate or graduate degree programs in digital forensics, established with the goal of producing trained professional digital investigators.

That's no longer the case. At Exterro, we've partnered with a number of educational institutions in the US and internationally, like Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA,  and St. Polten University in Austria. With a huge shortfall in digital forensic and cybersecurity professionals in the US, one can expect more institutions to offer programs and more undergraduate and graduate students to pursue degrees explicitly for the purpose of becoming a digital forensic investigator.

What is that journey like? What goes into education in digital forensics today? Would you be interested in finding out? If so, our latest FTK Over the Air podcast is for you. Here's a quick summary:

With over 700K open cybersecurity jobs in the US alone, how do we train the next generation of forensics professionals to take the reins? Recorded live at the HTCIA conference in Atlantic City, NJ, Justin Tolman sits down with some special guests who are just beginning or advancing their DFIR journeys. See the world of digital forensics through the eyes of four cybersecurity students and their professor, Glenn Goe, at Stark State College in Canton, Ohio.
