Exterro's Top 5 Privacy Resources of 2022

December 30, 2022

As we get ready to say goodbye to 2022, at Exterro we're taking a look back at the educational resources we've created over the past year. Thousands of people download materials from Exterro every year, but of course not every resource is created equal. In this second post, we'll cover the top five privacy resources we created this year in terms of overall popularity and usefulness. (If you want to check out our top 5 e-discovery resources of 2022, please do!)

Privacy compliance is always changing. New regulations come into effect (like CPRA and VCDPA do at the start of 2023) and the authorities that enforce them adapt their policies to both emerging privacy threats and evolving consumer expectations. Enforcement actions are issued, and organizations have the opportunity to learn from them and avoid making the same mistakes. Data breaches, ransomware attacks, and other cyber-incidents compromising consumer information offer similar opportunities for organizations to improve their privacy- and data-protection posture.

What are the privacy topics that were most compelling to our audience this year? Let's not wait any longer and dig right in.

5. The Rise of Privacy Compliance

In light of the constant evolution of domestic and international law, as well as trends pointing to more frequent and more expensive data breaches, data privacy has grown in importance to organizations and their chief legal officers (CLOs). The ACC 2022 Chief Legal Officers Survey, which polled 861 CLOs representing 20 industries and 38 countries, proves that privacy matters to legal departments more than ever. Download it to learn where privacy ranks in CLOs' priorities and how it's affecting enterprises today.

4. The 2022 Privacy Compliance Benchmarking Report

At Exterro, we love a good survey report. They help organizations learn where they stand relative to their peers and where they need to improve. Given the constant change in privacy regulations, operationalizing and managing compliance is an all-too-common challenge.  In the spirit of educating the legal market on these practices, Exterro and In The House recently collaborated on a survey polling in-house legal and privacy professionals on their organizations’ privacy technology and processes. Download the report to learn about data inventories, DSARs, and in-house privacy compliance technology.

3. The Data Retention Handbook

People’s right to request a copy of their personal data from both private and public sector organizations, has been an increasing part of privacy and data protection law since the 1980s. Individual awareness of these rights has grown in recent years, leading to many organizations receiving requests for the first time or witnessing a significant rise in the number of DSARs. While organizations have created workflows and portals to facilitate those requests, there are underlying foundational issues of data retention policies and practices that few organizations have addressed--and they're covered in this free-to-download Data Retention Handbook.

2. The State of International Data Privacy Regulations Today

The past five years have witnessed unprecedented change in the realm of data privacy regulation. Since the enactment of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, jurisdictions across the globe have revisited past privacy laws and enacted new ones. While in general the laws demonstrated a growing consensus that individuals have extensive rights over how their personal data is used, the particulars of the regulations vary widely. Download this whitepaper based on Exterro's The Future of Privacy webinar series to get expert insights from international data privacy experts on nine regions spanning the globe.

1. Mastering Data Privacy

As more states consider data privacy regulations, much of the legislation in question share a few common features including consumer rights over their data, fines for data breaches, and restrictions on which data may be held. While the specifics may vary, there's no doubt that certain fundamental principles underlie all these regulations, and mastering them can help your organization on its journey to compliance. Download Mastering Data Privacy to learn about five major principles that serve as the foundation to compliance.
